Measurement of cholesterol and triglyceride
Article Abstract:
Health professionals measure the amount of cholesterol and triglyceride in the blood to indicate the risk of coronary heart disease. Laboratory measurements include the total serum cholesterol concentration and the serum high density lipoproteins cholesterol concentration. Technicians calculate the difference between the two and report it as serum low density lipoproteins (LDL) cholesterol concentration, as it is the LDLs which carry 70% of the cholesterol circulating in the blood. The causes of raised levels of cholesterol and triglyceride are described.

Use of tumour markers in cancer diagnosis and treatment
Article Abstract:
Tumour markers, substances in the blood or urine released by tumour cells or by patients in response to a tumour, can aid the diagnosis of cancer as well as enabling the effectiveness of cancer treatment to be monitored. Tumour markers currently in use include alpha fetoprotein, carcinoembryonic antigen, beta human chorionic gonadotrophin, prostate specific antigen and hormones such as calcitonin. However none of these are both specific and totally sensitive for a type of cancer. Non-malignant diseases can also lead to raised amounts of tumour marker.

Laboratory diagnosis of acute myocardial infarction
Article Abstract:
Laboratory testing of blood is routinely undertaken for all patients who are thought to have suffered an acute myocardial infarction (MI). Diagnosis generally focuses on the enzymes creatine kinase (CK), aspartate transaminase (AST) and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH). A number of new tests have been developed recently which allow a diagnosis of MI to be made much more rapidly, and new indicators of myocardial damage are being discovered.
