Measuring children's antisocial behaviors
Article Abstract:
Reports that elevated lead levels may cause behavioral problems in children should be taken seriously. A 1996 study reported that boys with high bone levels of lead were more likely to exhibit antisocial behavior. The boys' behavior was assessed by parents and teachers using the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL) and by the boys themselves during a self-reported delinquency interview. The CBCL consists of a list of 113 behavioral disorders and has been used in 30 different cultures. It has a reliability of 0.87 to 0.89. The self-reporting delinquency interview has been used in 20 countries and has a reliability of 0.75 to 0.80. A 21-year study of 536 boys found that these behavioral assessments on the part of the boys, their parents and teachers were very effective in predicting which boys would be involved in violent crimes as adults.

Taking health status into account when setting capitation rates: a comparison of risk-adjustment methods
Article Abstract:
Physicians can use self-reported health measures or diagnostic data from claims databases to adjust their patient groups by risk when paid by capitation. Capitation pays physicians the same amount per patient per month, but sicker patients incur greater expenditures. Researchers evaluated ways to adjust capitation rates in a study of approximately 6,000 adult and elderly people enrolled in a managed care plan. Demographic information was least effective in adjusting risk. Self-reported health measures and diagnostic data from claims databases were more effective in adjusting risk.
