Measuring outcomes in nursing centers: otitis media as a sample case
Article Abstract:
A study of outcomes at a nursing center illustrates the positive value of such studies and raises issues for further inquiry. The study evaluated outcomes of 27 children with otitis media by interviewing parents. Eighty percent recovered without recurrence and 93% completed the regimen. Parents expressed great satisfaction with care. However, despite parent education, most children did not have a follow-up visit, and some parents reported no health teaching despite documentation of teaching in the medical records.

Recognizing depression among elderly adults in practice
Article Abstract:
Depression in the aged is often hidden by other conditions and therefore not always recognized. Elderly adults tend to seek treatment for physical rather than emotional or mental conditions, although physical challenges often include emotional effects. Nurse practitioners need to accurately assess psychological, social and environmental factors that could signal depression.
