Research to support holistic nursing taxonomies
Article Abstract:
Nursing taxonomies can incorporate a holistic perspective. Taxonomies classify a vocabulary of terms in order to standardize language. This facilitates research and data collection. Some of the existing nursing taxonomies include terminology for holistic nursing care. To date, computer data entry lends itself more readily to discrete data arranged hierarchically. However, research is underway on ways of incorporating holistic concepts. Natural language processing is one such promising area.

The Omaha System: a model for describing practice
Article Abstract:
The Visiting Nurse Association of Omaha has developed a holistic nursing taxonomy based on natural language. It has been tested and validated, is in the public domain, and as of a survey in 1992, was in widespread use in home care, public health agencies, and nursing colleges. It consists of three components all of which interrelate with each other: the Problem Classification Scheme, the Intervention Scheme, and the Problem Rating Scale for Outcomes.
