Congress may exempt special needs kids from Medicaid HMOs
Article Abstract:
Congress still prefers to shelter children with special health needs from mandatory health maintenance organization (HMO) enrollment, in spite of the need for a balanced-budget bill in 1997. About 30% of the American children with chronic health problems qualify for Medicaid for economic reasons, and the special needs exemption. Congress must reconcile the House and Senate versions of the bill prior to its August 1997 recess.

Wall St.: higher costs, consolidation for managed care
Article Abstract:
Analysts are reporting that managed care firms will continue to consolidate as profit margins grow slimmer, and higher costs will increase premiums. Foster Higgins Inc forecasts premium increases of 3% or 4% during 1997, while Smith Barney reports that 65% of all HMOs lost money during 1996. Health plans have had difficulties with mounting costs, even with increases in enrollment.
