Medical literature made easy: querying databases on the Internet
Article Abstract:
Physicians can now do extensive literature searches on the World Wide Web. The biggest source of medical databases is the US National Library of Medicine (NLM). NLM offers more than 40 different databases through its MEDLARS service. The most heavily used database is MEDLINE, which contains citations to over 8.5 million articles from more than 3,800 biomedical journals. MEDLINE can be accessed directly through the NLM Web site or through other vendors who license the data. However, search results may vary depending on which vendor is used.

Navigating to knowledge: tools for finding information on the Internet
Article Abstract:
There are many search engines that can find information on the Internet. Search engines can search the Internet on a specific keyword and retrieve all Web sites that contain information about that topic. Directories and indexes of Web sites can point users to an appropriate site. There are also search engines that can search for Usenet newsgroups on specific topics and can archive all messages found. Users can also search for people if they have participated in a newsgroup. A list of popular search engines is included.

Digital dialogue: sharing information and interests on the Internet
Article Abstract:
There are three types of Internet services that allow for the exchange of information. One is electronic mail, or e-mail, which allows users to send messages to another user. Any sensitive information sent by e-mail should be encrypted to prevent others from seeing it. A mailing list is similar to e-mail but allows a user to send a message to all of the people who subscribe to the list. A newsgroup is more like a bulletin board where a user can post a message that can be read by anyone who subscribes to the newsgroup.
