The sting in the tail
Article Abstract:
Medical professionals need to take their lead from polio sufferers who face the future being doubly afflicted by the after effects of polio and progressive muscle weakness, which is also known as post-polio syndrome (PPS). Up to 60% of the 1.63 million polio survivors throughout the world may eventually be affected by PPS, reducing mobility even further and resulting in severe swallowing, breathing and moving difficulties. Early diagnosis of PPS can help sufferers come to terms with their illness and improve outcome.

Plague: the flea-borne horror story
Article Abstract:
There is still a need in 1999 to watch out for signs of plague, a disease which originated centuries ago. There was a 6-fold increase incidences from 1983 to 1998, and multiresistant strains of Yersinia pestis have appeared. The UK armed forces have produced genetically modified vaccines, for which the outlook is good. It is important to control the population of rats and their fleas in the prevention of plague.
