Medicare and erythropoietin
Article Abstract:
Congress consideration to eliminate financial incentives might lead to the overuse of epoetin (erythropoietin) and other separately billable drugs by establishing a combined payment system for all end-stage renal disease (ESRD) services. The data from the patient safety survey indicate that about half of patients undergoing dialysis in the United States have their hemoglobin levels maintained at values above the maximum target specified in the product labeling for erythropoiesis-stimulating agents.
