New Medicare commission to work toward long-term plan
Article Abstract:
A bipartisan 17-member Medicare commission will begin meeting on Dec 1, 1997, and report to Congress by Mar 1, 1999, with its reform recommendations. The Medicare reform bill is expected to decrease spending by $115 billion between 1997 and 2002 mostly through reductions in industry reimbursement rates. An aging population is expected to financially burden Medicare by 2030.

The American Medical Assn is embarking on an ambitious initiative to educate physicians regarding the guidelines for billing Medicare for evaluation and management (e&m) services. Physicians had complained that the guidelines and documentation were cumbersome and feared fraud enforcement if they mistakenly submitted incomplete billing information.
