Meningitis: public health issues
Article Abstract:
There is great room for improvement in the management of meningococcal disease, which currently has a case fatality rate of up to 10%. Early treatment is important, since pre-admission treatment with antibiotics can reduce the fatality rate: however, the early symptoms can be non-specific. Public health nurses and consultants in communicable disease control need to work together to raise awareness amongst the public and the health profession about the signs and symptoms; and to encourage GPs to give pre-admission antibiotic treatment in suspected cases.
