Meningitis: time to panic?
Article Abstract:
A rise in the number of reported cases of meningococcal meningitis and related septicaemia cases during the early part of 1999 has alarmed UK health authorities and the press, although the increase could be put down more more effective methods of reporting. Parents appear to be extremely worried about meningitis, fueled partly by press reaction to the disease. Up to 623 cases of meningococcal infection were reported between January and February 1999, compared with 342 cases during the same period in 1998.

Smoke signals
Article Abstract:
Women are at greater risk of taking up smoking at a young age because of the falsely attributed glamour which is attached to the habit, according to researchers. Low self-esteem and a desire to fit in with other people puts greater pressures on young girls to start smoking, with the majority of women smokers having taken up the habit during their teenage years. The government needs to encourage positive role models who have influence over younger people.
