Article Abstract:
Continence advisers work with primary health care staff to assess the needs of patients with continence problems but a lack of guidelines means that work is often duplicated. A pilot programme aims to tackle this by educating staff about the most efficient use of continence products and improving communication between health professionals. An exhibition of new products will give staff the opportunity to discuss their use with carers from residential homes. The aim is to reduce costs and provide a better service for the patients.

A successful bladder retraining programme
Article Abstract:
It is very common for elderly people with continence problems to have a urethral catheter inserted. However, there are a number of drawbacks associated with this procedure, particularly the risk of urinary tract infection. In elderly people who still have a certain degree of mobility, it is wise to try to avoid catheterization. This is particularly successful if a bladder retraining programme is implemented. This allows the time between voiding to be gradually increased and can greatly boost the patient's morale.

Back to basics - continence
Article Abstract:
The wide range of incontinence problems suffered by elderly clients in nursing homes makes it essential for nursing staff to be informed as the different levels of care needed for each individual. A patient should be assessed on entrance into a nursing home, noting levels of incontinence, mobility and general well-being. Clients can become extremely distressed by incontinence problems, therefore nurses should deal with the situation with complete sensitivity.
