Mental health matters
Article Abstract:
Good health includes mental and physical health and a sense of social well being. The poor in cities are vulnerable to attacks on all of these elements. Lacking basic services which range from adequate police protection to garbage disposal, urbanites often have no control over urban violence.

Reducing urban violence
Article Abstract:
Nine of the 23 California cities in the Healthy Cities projects list violence issues on their agendas. In 1993, Berkeley, CA began a drive to promote public safety in the Telegraph Ave-South Campus area of the city. Since then arrests for assault have dropped 33% and for violent crime, 47%.

Hopes for mental illness sufferers
Article Abstract:
The World Health Organization's Division of Epidemiological Surveillance and Health Situation and Trend Assessment reports that over 400 million people worldwide suffer from some form of mental illness. WHO research efforts on schizophrenia and general psychological health are described.
