Merger of N.Y. med schools unravels
Article Abstract:
New York University (NYU) and Mount Sinai Medical Center announced Feb 14, 1997, that they have cancelled plans to merge their medical schools and hospitals. The two medical colleges had also planned to unite affiliated institutions and regional health care systems. A recent report ranking the quality of the NYU medical school higher than the academic quality at Mount Sinai was one factor in the failure of the deal.

Columbia deal collapse hurts Ohio Blues' image, viability

The Ohio Dept of Insurance's decision not to approve Columbia-HCA's acquisition of Blue Cross Blue Shield of Ohio reflects primarily on the integrity of some Blue Cross executives, according to observers. The insurance department questioned the deal's $299.5 million price tag, considered low for Blue Cross' assets, and the $19 million that Blue Cross officials who approved the buyout would have received.

Managed care pressure may force merger of medical centers
Article Abstract:
Stanford University Hospital and University of California, San Francisco Medical Center are considering a merger. The new non-profit organization would not be affiliated with either school. Economies of scale and consolidation are expected, but regents have asked for a legal examination of the non-profit status of the new organization and no details have yet been discussed.
