Managed care across borders; two New England Blues unveil regional plan
Article Abstract:
Blue Cross & Blue Shield Plan of Massachusetts and Healthsource New Hampshire will be joint owners of NHM LLC, the New Hampshire Massachusetts Limited Liability Corp., which is expected to yield more efficient and cost-effective health care. The 1.8-million-member Massachusetts plan lost $53.5 million in the first six months of 1996. The partners hope to draw other New England Blues into the network and compete with HMOs such as Harvard-Pilgrim Health Care, which also crosses state borders.

Mandating coverage
Article Abstract:
The 104th Congress passed legislation addressing maternity and mental health benefits, but failed to pass a measure restricting "gag" clauses in managed care contracts. Additionally, Congress approved a provision spearheaded by Rep Greg Ganske and Sen Bill Frist which renders patents on medical procedures virtually unenforceable.
