Metformin for non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus
Article Abstract:
Metformin is a useful oral drug for treating high blood-sugar in patients with non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM) that cannot be controlled by diet. Metformin works by enhancing the transfer of glucose out of the blood while decreasing the production of glucose by the liver. In a trial of 2520 NIDDM patients, it was found that diet along with metformin or another drug was a more effective treatment than diet alone. Metformin has negative side effects on the digestive system, including nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and anorexia. It also can cause the build-up of lactic acid in patients whose kidneys are not functioning properly. Metformin's 30-day minimum dosage cost is $47.50 to the pharmacist. It is sold under the brand name Glucophage. The usual dosage is 850 mg twice a day.

Glyburide/metformin (Glucovance) for type 2 diabetes
Article Abstract:
The US FDA has approved Glucovance, which contains glyburide and metformin in one pill for the treatment of type 2, or adult onset, diabetes. Glyburide increases insulin secretion and metformin makes the liver and muscles more sensitive to insulin. Glucovance is less expensive than both drugs separately.
