Industry first: drugmaker buys health care provider
Article Abstract:
Zeneca Group PLC's Apr 1997 acquisition of the 50% of Salick Health Care not already owned by Zeneca has prompted some experts to raise questions of ethics. Zeneca is the world's leading maker of cancer drugs, and Salick is the US' leading provider of one-stop cancer care. Arthur Caplan, director of the University of Pennsylvania's Center for Bioethics, noted that the prescription of a drug manufactured by the firm that is paying the prescriber represents a potential conflict of interest.

Can it be physician friendly?
Article Abstract:
Minimally invasive surgery has been slow to catch on with physicians because it is not easy to learn and do. Typically, the access site is small and the physician must use some instrument that is not easy to handle in the small area. However, improvements are being made, especially in cardiac surgery, with endoscopic coronary artery bypass techniques that could be used extensively by 2000.
