'Hard to reach' Hispanics get health news via physician's radio, TV shows
Article Abstract:
Dr. Elmer E. Huerta is doing his best to provide health education to Hispanics living in the US. Huerta was educated in Peru but did several fellowships in the US and is now a US citizen. Twenty-nine Spanish-language radio stations nationwide carry his 2-minute broadcasts up to 4 times a day. Huerta also hosts a live 1-hour cable TV program and a radio call-in program. His broadcasts, which originate in Laurel, MD, are heard in 8 of the 10 largest Spanish-speaking regions, including Miami, Dallas, New York and Tucson. He estimates that 10 to 15 million people hear his broadcasts. He also sees patients at his Washington, DC clinic.
