Mich. IMGs blast residency rule as discrimination
Article Abstract:
International medical graduates (IMG) in the Michigan State Medical Society are accusing the University of Michigan Medical Center of discriminating against medical school graduates trained outside of the US. The university medical center is considering implementing extensive IMG candidate review procedures in anticipation of federal cuts in funding for IMG residency positions. Residency programs throughout the US are considering similar proposals, according to the Association of American Medical Colleges.

Anesthesiologists challenge residency statistics
Article Abstract:
Academic and practicing anesthesiologists are expressing their concern over the declining number of anesthesiology resident positions that are being filled. They are also concerned that the specialty is being touted as in decline. A report by the National Resident Matching Program on the 1996 Match Day shows only 113 physicians entering into a first-year anesthesiology residency, compared to 136 in 1995, and 191 in 1994.

New York, NY's academic medical centers dominate the local market and during 1997 have increased their affiliations and their mergers to participate in managed care plans. Academic medical centers are considered important in tertiary care by the local health insurance programs. These centers are operating in a deregulated environment in the state of New York.
