Aging heart adapts to change; researchers begin to unravel some mechanisms involved
Article Abstract:
Death, disability and high health care costs caused by cardiovascular disease may be reduced by learning more about the adaptive powers of the heart. By using echocardiography, treadmill stress testing, magnetic resonance imaging and other methods, they hope to gather data on how the aging heart compensates for performance deficits. Previous studies have shown that the left ventricular wall thickens in older persons, possibly in response to a deficiency caused by stiff blood vessels. The aging heart adapts to a slower-filling left ventricle by propelling more blood into the cavity. Exercise may postpone some of the blood vessel stiffening associated with age. Eventually, the adaptive mechanisms fail in very elderly people.

Rapid research response emphasized in unique prostate cancer program
Article Abstract:
Research on the diagnosis and treatment of prostate cancer should accelerate due to a unique program originally funded by Michael Milken. CaP CURE, or the Association for the Cure of Cancer of the Prostate, funds cancer researchers and sponsors conferences. It has funded three consortia covering several major medical centers that are following 400 families with a member diagnosed with prostate cancer. CaP CURE is the largest source of private funding to prostate cancer research. Milken was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 1993.
