Midwifery-led care
Article Abstract:
A conference organised by Ayrshire and Arran and Fife Health Boards, Scotland has endorsed a House of Commons health committee report recommending an extension of midwifery-run maternity services. Evidence suggests that such services would allow continuity of care and make best use of resources. Midwives' expertise is currently wasted. A midwifery-run service would be cheaper and safer. Greater responsibitlty for midwives results in lower perinatal mortality.

Rhesus incompatibility
Article Abstract:
The importance of rhesus haemolytic disease of the newborn (Rh HDN) as a cause of mortality is now greatly reduced and today affects only two in every 1,000 births. This compares with 10 in every 1,000 prior to the development of screening programs. However, midwives must know how to manage pregnancies at risk and should ensure that those women receive early blood tests. The condition and treatment of Rh HDN is discussed.

Pregnant pause
Article Abstract:
Routine visits to ante-natal clinics do not always reveal potential problems. Calls for changes in the way pregnant women are screened include increasing visits of women in their first pregnancy and increased screening for eclampsia. Many women would prefer more visits during pregnancy, but midwives can provide information, social contact and support either with home visits or at the clinic.
