Midwifery research can help improve the quality of medical care during pregnancy and childbirth, as well as improving mothers' satisfaction with birth. Research has indicated that routine episiotomies are unnecessary and that the use of the pain reliever pethidine interferes with breastfeeding.

Training of midwives

Expanded training programs for midwives can help reduce maternal and perinatal mortality rates. Mozambique has instituted a successful experience-based training program that teaches medical skills while allowing midwives to follow local traditions.
