Comparing E- and D-speed film: the effects of various storage conditions on fogging
Article Abstract:
E-speed dental x-ray film may deteriorate more rapidly than D-speed film when stored in extreme conditions or when stored for an extended period of time. Researchers stored 2 boxes of E-speed and D-speed film in five locations with different background radiation readings and temperatures. During the next 17 months, investigators conducted 13 imaging trials to test the effects of storage on film quality. E-speed film stored in all locations had lower contrast and fogged more than D-speed film. Film stored on a windowsill in an x-ray storage closet or near a residential heat pump circulator had the lowest fogging rate. Film stored in a radiography operatory had the highest rate of fogging. The speed index for E-speed film rose beginning in the 15th week of the study and decreased near the 59th week. There was no observable pattern in the speed index for D-speed film.

To Russia with cling film
Article Abstract:
Palliative care nursing in a hospice in Moscow, Russia, with Voluntary Service Overseas (VSO) involves working long hours. It also involves coping with patient resistance to treatment. VSO nurse Irene Salmon works a 25-hour shift but her colleagues often work for 36 hours. Many patients do not know their diagnosis because, until 1996, it was illegal to inform them and the practice tends to continue. They also worry about unfamiliar treatments and appear to be generally accepting of high levels of pain.

Platelet storage -- time to come in from the cold?
Article Abstract:
Refrigerating blood platelets has an adverse effect on them, but leaving them at room temperature can cause bacterial contamination. A possible solution is to develop methods of eliminating bacterial contamination at room temperature. Some solution must be found because platelets must be stored for relatively long periods of time. Platelets are cells involved in blood clotting.
