Mission impossible?
Article Abstract:
Nurses working at the personality disorder unit (PDU) at Ashworth Special Hospital in Merseyside, UK, are seeking to establish a new care environment encompassing safety and humanity as required following a damning inspection report. Nurse James Corrigan was sacked for gross misconduct and corruption, with other nurses criticised for selling prescription drugs to patients. The hospital's lax security is mostly blamed upon executive nurse director Colin Dale. Patients had become free to do virtually as they pleased because the excessively liberal system favoured therapy over security.

The inspectors call...: surprise swoops on acute psychiatric wards threw a flashlight on to some worrying problems
Article Abstract:
A series of surprise inspections by the Mental Health Act Commission and the Sainsbury Centre for Mental Health of acute psychiatric wards throughout England and Wales, found that on some wards there was no staff in contact with the patients. Eight percent of wards were found to have less beds than patients and the security in some wards was poor. Just a third of women had access to women-only sleeping areas and toilet facilities, and in just over half of the wards, women patients had been bothered by male patients. Staff levels were mostly satisfactory.

Where nurses stand sentinel
Article Abstract:
Patients in Ashworth Special Hospital spoke to an official inquiry about what they felt was wrong with the hospital. Many felt they had to wait too long for treatment which would allow them to go free. Nurses were appreciated but they cannot discharge patients so the patients did not really value their contribution towards their treatment. Patients were concerned about becoming institutionalized and did not have complete faith in the management running the hospital.
