Muscle pain is inevitable during training but can be minimized by following simple rules such as never to overtrain and replenish fluids and energy stores to maintain correct body chemistry. Ice or cold treatment applications are recommended for obvious injury and heat therapy for non-obvious ones.

The usual RICE (rest, ice, compression and elevation) recommendation for treating muscle injuries has been supplemented by the proposition that the injured area must be immobilized in a position of tension. This ensures that the bleeding around the injured area is reduced.

Delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS) is caused by damaged muscle fibers allowing calcium to leak in from storage areas. DOMS can be prevented by avoiding severe workouts. Supplements of amino acids and succinates may be helpful.
