Monoclonal antibody direct immunofluorescence for the identification of Neisseria gonorrhoeae strains grown on selective culture media
Article Abstract:
Neisseria gonorrhoeae is a sexually transmitted bacteria causing gonorrhea infections in men and women. Many strains of gonorrhea are diagnosed using a variety of laboratory methods. Discharge from the patient is either stained and examined under the microscope or grown out in culture medium designed to grow only strains of gonorrhea and not other organisms. Different species are traditionally identified using a sugar fermentation test. New tests using a direct immunofluorescent antibody technique for identifying organisms was recently developed. Various commercially-prepared culture mediums needed to grow the gonorrhea organism were used and compared among the four identification techniques: sugar fermentation, monoclonal antibody direct immunofluorescence, polyclonal antibody immunofluorescence and monoclonal antibody coagglutination. The best results for identifying Neisseria gonorrhoeae were obtained with the Thayer-Martin culture medium and the more sensitive monoclonal antibody immunofluorescent technique of organism identification.

Comparison of the QuadFERM+ 2-hr identification system with conventional carbohydrate degradation tests for confirmatory identification of Neisseria gonorrhoeae
Article Abstract:
The QuadFERM+ rapid identification system (Analytab Products, Plainview, NY) was tested for its ability to identify the type of bacteria that are responsible for gonorrhea (Neisseria gonorrhea). One hundred eighty-five fresh and frozen samples, of which 115 contained Neisseria gonorrhea and the rest other bacteria, were analyzed. There were only two cases of disagreement between the QuadFERM+ system and conventional tests. In one case, the QuadFERM+ system reversed its verdict upon retesting, and in the other case, the verdicts were reversed after three hours. Thus the QuadFERM+ system is a rapid and accurate alternative method for identifying bacteria causing sexually transmitted diseases.

Comparisons of cost and accuracy of DNA probe test and culture for the detection of Neisseria gonorrhoeae in patients attending public sexually transmitted disease clinics in Los Angeles county
Article Abstract:
The Gen-Probe PACE 2 DNA probe test appears to be as accurate and cost-effective in identifying patients with gonorrhea infections as the standard culture test. Both tests were performed on 1,566 samples from 645 female patients and 921 male patients attending sexually transmitted disease clinics in Los Angeles, CA. Both tests accurately identified nearly all of the infected patients. The average cost for each culture test in this population was $3.11 while the PACE 2 average cost per test was $3.85. Nearly 12% of this population was found to have a gonorrhea infection.
