Monsel's solution-induced artifact in the uterine cervix
Article Abstract:
Use of Monsel's solution to stop bleeding after cervical biopsy may obscure the presence of disease in biopsy specimens. Subsequent cervical biopsies should be done two to three weeks later to allow Monsel's solution to dissipate. Researchers analyzed 24 cone biopsy specimens from cervical biopsies for the presence of dead tissue caused by blood coagulation. Seven of 16 biopsy specimens cut within 18 days of a prior use of Monsel's solution showed dead tissue from coagulation.

Indications for cone biopsy: pathologic correlation
Article Abstract:
Women who have cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) grade 1 may not need treatment with cervical conization. CIN is an abnormality of cervical tissue that is considered to be a precancerous state. Researchers analyzed the records of 2,969 women with CIN, of whom 604 were treated surgically, a process called conization. Only 21% of those with CIN 1 had serious disease compared to 75% of those with CIN 2 or 3. CIN 2 and 3 are more severe stages of CIN.

Residency training in colposcopy: a survey of program directors in obstetrics and gynecology and family practice
Article Abstract:
Many family practice residency programs do not have enough patients with an abnormal Pap smear to support colposcopy training. During colposcopy, an instrument is used to examine a woman's cervix. Medical residents must be able to recognize an abnormal cervix.
