More state societies try HMOs
Article Abstract:
State medical societies throughout the U.S. are establishing their own health maintenance organizations (HMO), with mixed results. Plans fell through for a physician-owned HMO in Florida, but doctor-owned managed care plans in states such as California, Colorado and Kansas are proving successful. Physicians claim that their plans are better because they offer broad provider networks, peer-established utilization guidelines and other benefits.

Physicians are viewing their office buildings as an investment for future and are thus showing more interest in owning real estate than they did in the past. The reasons behind this investment planning include favorable interest rates, reasonable contractor fees, and abundance of availability of medical office buildings.
