Mortality from pneumonia in children in the United States, 1939 through 1996
Article Abstract:
The death rate among children with pneumonia dropped 97% between 1939 and 1996. Much of this decline occurred between 1939 and 1950, and may be attributable to the discovery and therapeutic use of penicillin. The rate rose slightly again in the late 1950s due to an outbreak of influenza. A substantial drop occurred again between 1966 and 1982, probably due to the implementation of the Medicaid program, which covers many poor children.
