Much ado about methylene chloride
Article Abstract:
The new Methylene Chloride Standard issued by the Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA) in Jan 10, 1997 has become a controversy that has led to several legal battles. The new standard, which according to the OSHA, can account for a 97% reduction in cancer risks for workers has been accepted by the United Auto Workers and opposed by the Halogenated Solvents Industry Alliance. The OSHA standard requires an eight-hour time-weighted average PEL of 25 and a 15-minute short-term exposure level of 225 ppm. It also requires careful monitoring of airborne concentrations and exposure of employees to the substance.
