Multiple serotonergic brainstem abnormalities in sudden infant death syndrome
Article Abstract:
Cellular defects associated with altered 5-hydroxytryptamine(5-HT) receptor binding in the 5-HT pathway of the medulla in sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) are investigated. The results suggest that medullary 5-HT pathology in SIDS is very extensive, potentially including abnormal 5-HT neuron firing, synthesis, release, and clearance, providing preliminary evidence, which might help explain the increased vulnerability of boys to SIDS.
