Mushroom tea: toxicity concerns about new 'cure-all.' (Kombucha tea)
Article Abstract:
Kombucha tea is a symbiotic mixture of yeast and bacteria being hailed as a cure-all, but there are concerns about whether it is safe to drink. Also known as Manchurian tea or Kargasok tea, there is no scientific evidence to support its claims of effectiveness on AIDS, cancer, or multiple sclerosis. The Food and Drug Administration is concerned about the threat of mold contamination from it and warns its acidity makes it unsafe to store in ceramic or lead crystal containers. People allergic to antibiotics and mold spores may also experience adverse effects from drinking it.

Anti-smoking forces question movement's focus on youth
Article Abstract:
Speakers at a two-day national conference on tobacco control offered differing opinions on the direction anti-smoking campaigns should take. Some spoke out against the current focus on youth programs, noting that other initiatives, such as smoking cessation programs, environmental smoke and tobacco excise taxes, are being given too little attention. Supporters of the youth focus, however, cited Congressional directives and the increase in teen smoking as solid reasons for the current emphasis.

Despite fat concerns, women should still drink milk
Article Abstract:
Experts believe that drinking milk is the best way for women to ingest recommended amounts of calcium. But Dr. David A. McCarron, chief medical advisor to the National Milk Processors Promotion Board, warned that individuals concerned about fat intake should drink skim or reduced-fat milk. A National Institutes of Health report has recommended that the food industry promote increased calcium intake. Information on dealing with lactose intolerance is included.
