Mycobacterium tuberculosis virulence: Lipids inside and out
Article Abstract:
The significance of lipids in the pathogenesis of Mycobacterium tuberculosis is discussed. Researchers have established phenolic glycolipids (PGL) as a mycobacterial effector that directly modulates the host innate immune response, thereby facilitating further studies on identification of macrophage receptors and signal transduction pathways targeted for immunomodulation by pathogenic mycobacteria.

In vivo gene silencing identifies the Mycobacterium tuberculosis proteasome as essential for the bacteria to persist in mice
Article Abstract:
The conditional gene silencing is used for determining whether Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) gene needed for optimal growth in vivo is also important for virulence. Results show that conditional gene silencing can facilitate the validation of up to 800 potential Mtb drug targets and also help in understanding the host-pathogen dynamics.

Defining the 'survivasome' of Mycobacterium tuberculosis
Article Abstract:
The genome of Mycobacterium tuberculosis H37Rv was mutagenized by using the mariner-derived transposon Himar1 along with microarray-based genome and transcriptome profiling. Transposon site hybridization (TraSH) is used to investigate the genetic requirements of Mycobacterium tuberculosis for growth in vivo.
