Mycoplasma genitalium in the cervices of Japanese women
Article Abstract:
Mycoplasma genitalium may be a cause of nonchlamydial cervicitis or adnexitis in Japanese women. Researchers evaluated 200 Japanese women attending obstetric and gynecology clinics and found that 64 had cervicitis, 53 had adnexitis, and three had both infections. Five of 57 women (8.8%) with cervicitis and two of 49 women (4.1%) with adnexitis were infected with M. genitalium. Eighty asymptomatic pregnant women showed no evidence of M. genitalium infection. M. genitalium may be a cause of genital infection in pregnant women which may then ascend to the upper reproductive organs.

Mycoplasma genitalium in Males With Nongonococcal Urethritis
Article Abstract:
A microorganism called Mycoplasma genitalium may be the cause of many cases of urethritis in men. Urethritis is an inflammation of the urethra, which carries urine from the bladder. Researchers took urethral swabs from 178 men with symptoms of urethritis and 23 healthy men and tested the samples for Mycoplasma genitalium. Twenty-nine percent of the symptomatic men tested positive compared to only one of the healthy men. In 14% of the symptomatic men, Mycoplasma genitalium was the only organism present. All the men were cured by treatment with either doxycycline or azithromycin.
