Correlates of Herpes Simplex Virus Seroprevalence Among Women Attending a Sexually Transmitted Disease Clinic
Article Abstract:
Exposure to infectious herpesviruses is high among African American women attending sexually transmitted disease clinics. Researchers tested 1,103 women aged 18-35, of whom 89% were black, attending a clinic. Seventy-two percent of the women had antibodies to herpes simplex virus (HSV)-1, and 64% had antibodies to HSV-2. The presence of HSV-2 antibodies was associated with a greater number of sexual partners, early first intercourse, previous syphillis, and the lack of antibodies to HSV-1.

Mechanical Failure of the Latex Condom in a Cohort of Women at High STD Risk
Article Abstract:
Women who have little experience with condoms may experience a higher rate of breakage than those with more experience. In a study of 21,852 condoms used by 892 women, 2.3% broke and 1.3% slipped during sexual intercourse. Young women who engaged in risky sexual practices were most likely to break the condom. Women with more experience with condoms were less likely to break them. This shows that a break is not necessarily caused by a defect in manufacturing the condom.
