NIOSH condemns workplace-murder epidemic
Article Abstract:
The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health has issued an alarm on rising cases of homicide in the workplace. The federal agency, in its report 'Homicide in US Workplaces: A Strategy for Prevention and Research,' revealed that homicide was the third largest cause of deaths among all workers between 1980 and 1985 and was the greatest cause of death among female workers. High-risk sectors are the retail, service and law-enforcement industries.

Doctors issue new guidelines
Article Abstract:
New health program guidelines issued by the American College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine range from employee mental and physical health assessments to program administrator training. It addresses treatment of both occupational and nonoccupational injuries and rehabilitation of drug- or alcohol-addicted employees. Workplace inspection also feature as a primary consideration.

Guidelines attack high blood pressure
Article Abstract:
The National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute launched a public campaign aimed at reducing high blood pressure. The institute recommended guidelines that would lower hypertension and save about 40,000 lives a year from heart disease and stroke, which are complications of high blood pressure. Recommendations include decreasing salt intake, losing weight and drinking less alcohol.
