Mature ideals
Article Abstract:
Mature entrants can make a valuable contribution to nursing. A wide range of skills extend their nursing potential. Nurse professionals and educators should recognise the value of previous experience. They should provide for the special needs of older students. Training should be flexible to fit in with existing commitments and individualised to meet differing abilities.

Breaking the rules
Article Abstract:
Nurses should not be afraid to question the validity of patient treatments. They should regard fellow professionals as equals. Changes in nursing education aim to develop more challenging attitudes. However, the educational process may be falling short of this ideal. Traditional practices that inhibit nurses' initiative should be changed.

Sexuality matters
Article Abstract:
Many homosexuals and lesbians have faced discrimination in hospitals, so nurses need to develop good practice in addressing the issues of sexuality relating to patients. Many community services have been set up, where care is linked to openness about sexual orientation as a direct result of this discrimination.
