Nephrotoxicity after ifosfamide
Article Abstract:
The use if ifosfamide, an antitumor drug, has become widespread in treating certain types of tumors. In adults a common adverse effect of this agent is kidney toxicity, but the effects of ifosfamide on kidney function in children have not been described. The kidney function of 11 children and adolescents treated with ifosfamide was monitored. Six of the children showed impairment of the glomerulus, the renal structure which filters blood. All 11 suffered damage to the proximal tubules, and 6 developed problems in the distal tubules. (The tubules are the areas in the kidney where the sodium, potassium, phosphate, and water content of urine are adjusted). Kidneys are not supposed to allow protein in the urine, but 10 children had abnormal urinary levels of protein. Due to abnormal phosphate levels, two children developed rickets (loss of calcium salts in bone); one of these children also had diabetes insipidus (excess urination and drinking). These results suggest that children treated with ifosfamide are at risk for kidney toxicity just as adults are. Most of these children had a good prognosis if given proper medical treatment. Further assessment of ifosfamide toxicity in children is needed. (Consumer Summary produced by Reliance Medical Information, Inc.)

The effect of liquid fibre on feeding behavior
Article Abstract:
A study of influence of liquid fibre (LF) on the gastric distension leading to changes in eating behavior shows that LF affects the eating behavior by altering psychological factors related to the eating habits. LF increased the feeling of fullness leading to reduced hunger and desire to eat. Subjects consumed nearly normal amounts of preselected appetizing test meals despite the reduced motivational parameters. Psychological aspects of this shift in the behavioral pattern are discussed. Effectiveness of LF in maintaining prolonged satiety is also discussed.
