Network methodologies, contact tracing, gonorrhea, and human immunodeficiency virus
Article Abstract:
Developing sexual networks to trace the spread of sexually transmitted diseases provides valuable information for researchers and public health practitioners, but improvements are needed. Ideally, developing sexual networks enables researchers and practitioners to identify and target key persons who are major sources of disease transmission. However, obtaining reliable and complete information on sexual contacts and the inability to track down contacts is a major problem. Innovative strategies include repeat interviewing, collecting information on social contacts and hangouts, and collecting data on behaviors, beliefs, and norms.

Antibiotic prophylaxis among commercial sex workers in Cebu City, Philippines: patterns of use and perceptions of efficacy
Article Abstract:
Prostitutes in the Philippines may use antibiotics under the false impression that they prevent sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) and HIV infection. Researchers surveyed 200 prostitutes in Cebu City, Philippines. Thirty-eight percent said they had used antibiotics to protect themselves against STDs before. Unregistered freelance prostitutes were much more likely to use antibiotics as a preventive measure than were registered prostitutes. Unregistered prostitutes also saw three times more clients and were much less likely to use condoms. Preventive antibiotic use against STDs may not work and may lead to antibiotic resistance.
