Home alone, and in danger
Article Abstract:
Physicians should promote electronic alert devices and communities where elderly people living alone have much more social support. In 1996, physicians in San Francisco reported that 367 elderly people were found alone and hurt at home during a 12-week period. One-fourth were found dead. Many died from preventable causes such as dehydration, hypothermia and infection. An estimated 300,000 elderly people nationwide may be hurt alone at home each year. Communities that have intercoms, communal meals, recreational programs and systems for checking on people may be the best way to prevent these tragedies.

Aging better
Article Abstract:
Several researchers have suggested that healthy lifestyle habits in older people improve the performance of routine daily tasks and delay the development of functional disabilities. People who do not smoke, maintain an moderate body weight, and get regular exercise may function more effectively in old age. It is not so clear how these patients will function beyond 75 years of age, the average of those in one study group. During the eighth decade of life, the need for nursing home care increases substantially. Nevertheless, doctors should continue to recommend healthy habits.
