New president: give patients a choice
Article Abstract:
Daniel H. Johnson Jr., MD, the new president of the American Medical Association, emphasized the importance of allowing patients to make real choices about their health care delivery in his inaugural address to the association. Johnson wants to ensure that patients have enough knowledge to make informed decisions from a wide variety of options, and opposes a common view that patients are not smart enough to make those choices. He favors medical savings accounts and other options that don't isolate the patient from the true costs of their health care delivery system.
