Indicators of nicotine addiction among women - United States, 1991-1992
Article Abstract:
The number of female smokers addicted to nicotine appears to be high. Data from the 1991 and 1992 National Household Survey on Drug Abuse were analyzed. In 1993, approximately 22 million women were believed to be smokers. Seventy-five percent of women between 12 and 24 years old and 75% of those 25 years and older who participated in the survey indicated they felt dependent on cigarettes. Slightly more than 81% of those in the younger age group and 77.8% of those in the older age group who tried to cut back on smoking during the 12 months prior to the study reported being unable to do so. Approximately 35% of the women reported experiencing withdrawal symptoms when they tried to cut back on their smoking. Overall, about 80% of the women reported symptoms of nicotine addiction.

The emerging market for long-term nicotine maintenance
Article Abstract:
The tobacco industry and the pharmaceutical industry may end up competing for the nicotine maintenance market. This market consists of smokers who might buy a cigarette without the health risks of tobacco and those who want to quit altogether. The tobacco industry has developed two cigarette-like devices that do not burn tobacco but heat reconstituted tobacco instead. These cigarettes produce much less smoke and contain fewer carcinogens than tobacco. The pharmaceutical industry has developed nicotine gum, patches, nasal sprays and even a nicotine lollipop for smokers who want to quit.
