Clothing stores are marking down fewer prices than in the early 1990s, when the recession started, but are selling more clothes at lower initial prices. Other marketing techniques include offering two for one sales, free gifts and buying high-demand items in bulk to sell at lower prices.

Could the label be wrong?

Clothing manufacturers are required by the Federal Trade Commission to label clothes sold in the US with instructions for care that have proven effective in testing. Clothing that is damaged by the very processes recommended on care labels continues to be a problem for consumers.

Clothes retailers cater to the needs of male shoppers more than women shoppers because men spend money for clothes that are expected to last longer. More upscale retailers are now providing the same services for women shoppers that men have enjoyed.
