Noisy neighbours
Article Abstract:
The potentially chronic problem of noise-making by elderly patients in continuing care wards needs to be addressed so that a good quality of life can be provided for both staff and patients. Social and environmental stimulation should be increased to avoid boredom among patients. Nurses should be trained to identify noise-triggering environmental factors in individual patients so that tailored intervention methods can be developed. Building layouts should also take into account for need for patients to exercise. Attention is often paid to noise-makers by both nurses and other patients, with quieter patients more likely to be ignored. Noise-making can be abusive or involve ramblings or repetitive phrases, with non-verbal noises such as screams also a noticeable problem.
