Nurse, heal thyself
Article Abstract:
Many nurses in the UK are very unwilling to take sick leave. This is largely because they are aware that doing so would place additional pressure on their colleagues. Agency nurses may go to work when they are unwell because they are not entitled to sick pay. The UKCC code of conduct indicates that nurses should not do anything to endanger the safety, condition or interests of patients, and it can be argued that a nurse who cares for patients when unwell is breaching this code. Nurses who care for particularly vulnerable patients, such as those in oncology, should be very cautious about working when unwell.

So you want to be a ... naturopath
Article Abstract:
Naturopathy is based on ancient philosophies but it has developed as a profession in the UK only since the 1960s. Its central emphasis is that the body-mind system is self-healing if it has the correct food, rest and freedom from excessive stress. Treatments, which comprise attention to these three factors, may include massage, herbal remedies and hydrotherapy. Nurses may be attracted to this profession. Nursing experience is advantageous due to the training in patient interaction, but nurses would still have to undertake the intensive four-year training course.

The secret history: when managers are faced with a nurse experiencing mental health problems they do not always know how to respond
Article Abstract:
There are no clear guidelines to cover mental illness in staff according to RCN spokeswoman Diane Gaston, and the NHS Executive is to prepare clear guidelines with input from the RCN. Hospital managers currently have to balance the operation of an equal opportunities recruitment system with ensuring that patients and staff have protection from unstable employees. A survey by MIND, the mental health charity, found that the health and caring sector appeared to be the most intolerant to people with mental health problems.
