Preventing genetic discrimination
Article Abstract:
Legislation to prevent insurers from limiting or denying health coverage based on genetic tests is being proposed by both Pres Clinton and Congressman Cliff Stearns. Both measures are a reaction to fears that insurers will deny coverage based on the growing knowledge of afflictions that can be tested for by identification of genes. The Kassebaum-Kennedy reform law provided such protection for those in group plans, but the proposed bills would do the same for individuals.

Employer exemption key in new mental health parity law
Article Abstract:
The Mental Health Parity Act was passed in Sep 1996 and goes into effect on Jan 1, 1998. The act does not require mental health coverage for companies with less than 51 employees or when health care costs will increase by over 1% annually. Mental health advocates are concerned that businesses may attempt to dodge coverage if exemptions are made too simple.
