Nurse heroes of the century
Article Abstract:
Jean Phillips and Michelle Willis are two nurses who have required a high level of nursing care after cosmetic surgery. Phillips, who is in charge of education at Strathcarron Hospice, Stirling, Scotland, had a tumour on her face for which the surgery was extensive. One of the effects was a change in her voice. She finds herself better informed, more sensitive to her patients and more conscious of small matters as a result of her own illness. Willis, having had had a number of operations on a badly disfigured face, is well equipped to care for patients on the maxillofacial ward of Sunderland Royal Infirmary.

Financial backing for healthier backs
Article Abstract:
A study showed that about 35% of 2,056 nurses' absences were due to musculoskeletal problems and this costs the National Health Service (NHS) as much as 6 million pounds sterling per month when all factors are considered. However, NHS employers tend to give occupational health a low priority and they do not follow up on initial training courses or supervise staff on wards. It may be costly to introduce moving and handling equipment but in comparison to the costs of having staff off sick it is money well spent. It also improves staff morale and makes it easier to recruit new staff.
