The role of fibre in the treatment of secondary hyperlipidaemia in nephrotic patients
Article Abstract:
A study of the influence of dietary therapy, especially fibre, on the treatment of hyperlipidemia and chronic glomerular disease shows that diet manipulation substantially reduced the serum levels of total cholesterol, phospholipids Apo A and Apo B. A reduction in the levels of serum triglycerides was also observed. High reduction in urinary protein secretion was observed for the vegetarian diet. The potential for the combination of vegetarian diet, the soyabean protein and fibre in the treatment of hyperlipidemia of nephrotic syndrome is discussed.

The effect of olestra on breath gas production and faecal microbial counts
Article Abstract:
Normal intestinal fermentation of dietary fiber is not affected by ingestion of 24 g per day of olestra for 36 days, according to results of a study. In addition, gut microflora populations are not significantly changed. After either moderate or high fiber intake, olestra shows no significant effect on breath hydrogen or methane. A total of 94 subjects completed the 36-day study, which used a parallel, placebo-controlled double-blind protocol. No clinically significant health status effects of olestra consumption were found.

Effect of dietary fibre on weight correction after modified fasting
Article Abstract:
Very low caloric diet and treatment with dietary fibre complement are useful for weight-reducing programmes for obese subjects. This was revealed from the comparison of the effect of a dietary fibre supplement with a placebo. The treatment indicated a uniform distribution of adipose tissue and no cardiovascular diseases, acute, and chronic liver diseases. The procedure and the result of the experiment are discussed.
