Nurse-led hospital service takes on GPs' night calls
Article Abstract:
Nurses responded to a degree of threat to their community hospital service by offering to take the night calls of their over-stretched local general practitioners (GPs). The nurses at Swanage Community Hospital, Dorset, England, agreed protocols with the local practice and launched the service in May 1995. The nurses use a computer system which prompts their questions when they speak with patients and keeps a record of questions and outcomes. The nurses can opt to see patients at the hospital, refer them to the district general hospital or request a GP visit.

Cut the fat: Which is the best way to encourage patients to lose weight sensibly?
Article Abstract:
There has been confusion and controversy over the best way to tackle the increase in obesity. Many people cannot stick to a rigid slimming diet for long enough for the brain to re-engage control over normal body-weight according to Philip James, director of the Rowett Research Institute in Aberdeen. A multidisciplinary approach is required by GPs and nurses according to dietitian Kate Trotter. Other approaches include very low calorie diets, behaviour changes, exercise, surgical treatment or drug treatment.

Between home and hospital: care of the older person
Article Abstract:
Intermediate care services are those intended to limit older people's contact with hospitals. The UK government is keen to promote these services in order to free up hospital beds. In many cases, nursing homes can be used to fill the gap between hospital and home care.
