Nurse practitioner service relieves pressure in A&E
Article Abstract:
Patients attending the casualty departments of three hospitals in South Kent, UK, are being seen by emergency nurse practitioners rather than doctors unless their condition is serious. The nurse practitioners deal with cuts, infections, stings, minor burns, head injuries and the removal of foreign bodies. The nurses have completed a training programme, and a video link means that nurses can get advice from a doctor if they need to. Nurses welcome the chance to develop their expertise but the scheme has met with objections from some medical staff.

Article Abstract:
Nursing unions believe that the reorganisation of the blood transfusion service will endanger patients' lives. The number of centres will be reduced from 15 to 10, thereby saving an estimated 10 million pounds sterling. Centres to be closed are in Plymouth, Oxford, Lancaster, Brentwood and Liverpool. The National Blood Authority aims to reduce its 4,000-strong workforce by 10% over three years.

A matter of chance
Article Abstract:
The role of nurse practitioners in accident and emergency departments should be examined thoroughly, according to the Clinical Standards Advisory Group. The group's report on emergency and urgent admissions has revealed that just three out of 30 departments have nurse practitioners. One in 10 patients currently has to wait over two hours to obtain treatment.
